How To: Speak to Someone About Jesus

1. Adopt the Apostle Paul’s Approach (1 Corinthians 9)

Be like the person you are speaking to: When speaking to a Jew, approach as a Jew. When speaking to a Roman, approach as a Roman. When speaking to the weak, approach as one who understands weakness.

In short: Know who you are speaking to and adapt to them.

2. Pray First

Before you speak, PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. Ask Jesus for His direction and wisdom. Remember, His promise: “I will be with you always.” (Matthew 28:20) Trust that He will guide your conversation.

3. Be Prepared Before Engaging

Do not start a conversation without preparation.

If your friend asks a challenging question (e.g. “You're a Christian, what would you do in this situation?”) Avoid giving a quick answer.

Respond with something like: “Boy, now there’s a question. Can I think about that? In the meantime, can you tell me more?”

Gather information learn as much as you can about their perspective.

4. Ask Thought-Provoking Questions

After some discussion, ask:

“Can I ask you, before I leave, who in this life gives you the most hope?”

No matter their answer, follow up with:

“Have you ever read the Bible?”

If they say “Yes” or “No,” respond:

“The Bible has been around a long time. It must have something good to say. Let’s have coffee, and I’ll show you how it changed me.”

Set up a follow-up meeting.
